As a leader, it is important to reach beyond our ‘world’ and expand our thoughts and capacity by delving into the work that others are doing. I found this snippet of Ricardo Gonzalez’s work to be intriguing. I look forward to his upcoming book. Maybe you’d like to put it on your list…
Want to learn how to become a Cultural Master?
Ricardo González, CEO and Founder of Bilingual America, thinks we can do better than tolerate people who are different to ourselves. In fact, he thinks we can learn to love them. In his upcoming book, “Six Stages to Cultural Mastery,” Ricardo offers readers an opportunity to transform their lives by learning to deeply appreciate diversity, while still embracing their own culture.
The first two stages to personal and corporate cultural transformation, Education and Engagement are essential to experiencing the third stage of Empathy. I cannot connect with people I know nothing about or say I care about people I have never really engaged with. Empathy leads to Excitement: What’s our potential? What can we make happen together? Empowerment is where we combine resources to accomplish the things we are excited about! The previous five stages carry us, personally and corporately, to the place of Endearment where we find ourselves loving each other — not simply tolerating each other.
The ultimate goal of cultural mastery is love. “I don’t want you to tolerate me; I want you to love me so that we can have a wonderful, beautiful and creative partnership.” The alternative is a furthering of the cultural divide we are currently facing in every aspect of society. To close that gap, the answer is simple, do the internal work now to become a Cultural Master…because as Ricardo says, “Whatever is inside of you–WHATEVER–will for some reason, in some way, at some time, in some place, come out; and in today’s world it has the power to destroy you and your company.”
